A Student's Guide To Studying

General Advice

  • Buy a calender to record assignment due dates, labs, scheduled tests and examinations. Use this as a tool to manage and guide your studying time.
  • Locate a health care facility (walk in clinic, doctor's office or hospital) and pharmacy near your residence. In the event of sickness these will be part of your plan in restoring your health.
  • Maintain a consistent bed time. This is to pro-actively care for yourself and so the studying won't become overwhelming from being over tired.
  • Plan breaks into your studying time so it will be effective and allow you to study with an alert mind.
  • When moving away from home to pursue post secondary education it is very important to involve yourself in a church fellowship for support and loving accountability during the transition into your adult life.
  • Studying Techniques

  • Complete assigned readings prior to the lecture. Even if you aren't understanding, this will help things click for you during your lectures.
  • Don't rush through the assigned readings. They are designed to help you apply what you are learning.
  • Find out when your professors are available outside of class for assistance. Do they have office hours? Is there a phone number or e-mail address you may reach them through?
  • Get to know preferred methods of contacting your class mates (Instant messaging, cell phone numbers, e-mail address, etc.) so when you are stuck you have someone to help you.
  • Have a study partner.
  • When completing assignments, readings and preparing reports review the material you have studied before taking a break.
  • When making notes include charts, graphs or examples given during the lecture to help you remember and apply the material you are studying.
  • Test and Exam Preparation

  • At the start of each test or exam read over the questions. This is to help you budget your time on the sections you estimate will require more time than others.
  • Ensure you attend the lecture before each test. Pay attention for hints the professor gives.
  • Have a full nights rest before each test or exam you write. This will help your focus.
  • Pay attention to the content of the pending test or exam. Know what material you need to review.
