Advice Column: Strategies To Cope With Grief

Here are ideas to help you move through the intense emotions which come during a season of grief:

  • Forgive past hurts. This will bring closure and in time allow you to move with your life.
  • Join a local gym facility. This will maintain your health and have interaction with others to help fight the desire to be isolated during this season of your life.
  • Plant a flower or tree in memory of your friend who died.
  • Share funny memories of the loved one who died with your friends and family members.
  • Take up a creative hobby as a means of expressing the wide array of emotions that come during a season of grief. Examples: Painting, nature photography, drawing, making crafts, playing a musical instrument

If you have signs of depression such as problems sleeping, a desire to commit suicide or loss of control of your emotions contact your local physician, hospital or social worker for an assessment and to develop a game plan enabling you to work through this difficult time.
